Family Members:
Dr. George H. Kates, age 84, of West Bloomfield, Michigan, passed away on June 16, 2026.

Born on January 20, 1942, to Simon and Adele Kates, George was raised in Detroit and attended Mumford High School. His undergraduate education at the University of Michigan made him a loyal Wolverine, and he went on to receive his PhD in psychology from Wayne State University.

George's work as a clinical psychologist wasn't just a job to him—it was a passion. Over the years, he saw countless clients, some of whom stayed with him for decades. His dedication is evident in the fact that he was still helping his clients up until a couple days before his death.

George sadly lost his father at a very young age and was raised by his beloved mother. In 1965, George began his nearly 30-year marriage to Linda, with whom he raised two daughters. He married Rosalyn Goldberg in 1998; they were married for 28 years, up until the end of his life.

George loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Rosalyn; his daughters, Lisa (Jim) Weldy and Julie (Matt) Berg; and his grandchildren, Aaron (Lydia Wilson) Weldy and Rachel Weldy. He was also a dog lover. He is survived by his beloved poodle, Snookie; his grand-dog, Ted; and his grand-cat, Simba.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Adele Kates; his sister, Marilyn Kanter; his ex-wife, Linda Kates; his dogs, Snoopy and Heidi; his bird, Puffy Birdles; and his grand-dog Midnight.
