Born in Detroit, Michigan on January 23, 1942, he was the first son of Ruth and Joe Silverman and older brother to Raymond and Lois. He grew up in Detroit, and graduated from Mumford High School in 1960, collecting a close-knit group of friends he maintained for a lifetime. Honoring his father’s legacy of hard work, overcoming obstacles, and caring for his family, he attended the University of Michigan, then Wayne State University and Medical School.
Phil served his country during the Vietnam War as a Captain in the United States Air Force at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona, completed his residency in Radiology at the University of Michigan, and then interned at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.
For 30 years he had a successful career as a Radiologist in Toledo, Ohio, working for Toledo Radiological Associates and raising his family.
For Phil, the only thing more important than Michigan Football was family. From his early days as one of 30 first cousins (his father was one of 11 siblings), there was an emphasis on family. From birthdays to holidays to family gatherings, like Silverman family picnics and Hanukkah hayrides, there was never a shortage of love and laughter. The Silvermans knew how to have a good time and create fun from very little. As a husband and father, Phil applied these values to every aspect of his life. Phil was a true connector, was quick to laugh or tell a joke, and was always the life of the party. His infectious smile could light up a room. He made friends easily and everywhere he went, and believed that relationships made life worth living and are meant to last a lifetime.
Phil met his wife Barbara when he was 20 years old and they grew together for 57 years, marrying in 1965, and loving and prioritizing each other first along with their children, Michelle and Jared. He and Barbara danced their way through life, even being crowned “The King and Queen of Rock ‘n Roll” in Toledo, Ohio. They fell in love and stayed in love until his final day.
Phil was a devoted and loving father to Michelle and Jared, to their spouses Ron and Lange, and to his grandchildren Ally and Hannah. There was nothing he wouldn’t do and nowhere he wouldn’t go for those he loved. He spearheaded family vacations in the early days and holidays across the country, and eventually even International travel, which was never his idea. Phil was a YES MAN in the best of ways and aimed to please. He loved his kids best of all and lit up like a Christmas Tree whenever they were near, even though he was Jewish.
On the afternoon of Friday, June 28, 2019, Phil passed away from congestive heart failure at the MorseLife Center in West Palm Beach, Florida after a courageous battle with Lewy Bodies Dementia. Phil was 77 years old.
Phil will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. The legacy of his light-filled spirit, huge heart, generosity, and kindness will continue through those who were lucky enough to know him.
